Renovation

My Personal Funded Renovation Project

After my father passed, I returned home to visit two long-neglected family properties. One was restorable; the other had to be cleared and sold. As his health declined and my workload grew, his dream of restoring them faded. During COVID, I was stuck in Los Angeles, but once life resumed, I decided to finish what he started.

Though I’d built a career at a desk, I’ve never shied away from hard work. Having spent time on construction sites and factory floors, I found meaning in getting my hands dirty again. This house once hosted family holidays—now it’s a place of both memory and renewal. Rebuilding it reminded me that I’m not just a designer, but a builder—capable of bringing both vision and legacy back to life.

Progress

Restoring this home taught me the true craft of building through my own hands.

With some help, we completed the siding ourselves, ensuring every detail was done right. Much of the old wood had to be replaced, and since the original columns were hollow, we lifted the porch to install proper support beams with decorative wraps. Although previous repairs had been made, poor workmanship—like missing flashing and house wrap—led me to strip everything back and start fresh. I also documented parts of the process, including a video showing how I like to wire an outlet receptacle—hands-on work that reflects my commitment to learning every step of the craft.
